For the past three years, we have focused on providing an annual conference to encourage, equip, and empower regional churches and leaders. Life has drastically changed over the past few months as we have faced a worldwide pandemic from the emergence of COVID-19. Even as some areas of the country are beginning to explore how they might lift public stay-at-home orders and restrictions, we are also aware that there is still a long and obstacle-filled road ahead for public gatherings and events like ours. Our event would be facing additional gathering restrictions, safety guidelines, and hesitancy among attendees, but also we face a great spiritual responsibility to steward the lives of our presenters, sponsors, and attendees.

For these reasons, we have decided to postpone this August 29th event until we have more clarity on how we might gather safely. All pre-sold tickets will be refunded throughout the next eight days by our ticketing company, Eventbrite. Though we intend to reschedule, we do not yet know when we will be able to safely plan for this event. Dr. Christine Pohl, as well as our co-hosts and sponsors, have been super understanding and we are thankful for their investment in this postponement – as well as in the original plans for this event.

2020 RI Conference:

Living Into Community with Dr. Christine D. Pohl

Every church has experienced betrayal, deception, grumbling, envy, exclusion. These experiences make life together difficult and prevent church communities from developing the skills, virtues, disciplines, and practices they need to nurture sturdy, growing, healthy, and life-giving church communities.

On August 29, individuals are invited to the annual Revival Initiative Conference, this year themed – “Living Into Community with Christine D. Pohl,” which is being hosted this year by both the Barnabas Initiatives and the Revive Initiative. Pohl will explore four specific individual and communal Christian practices — gratitude, promise-keeping, truth-telling, and hospitality — that can counteract those destructive forces and help churches and individuals build and sustain vibrant, growing, unifying, and healthy church communities.

Pohl will draw on a wealth of personal and professional experience and interacting with the biblical, historical, and moral traditions, thoughtfully discussing each practice, including its possible complications and deformations, and points to how these essential practices can be better cultivated within our church communities and in our families.

Dr. Christine D. Pohl is professor emeritus at Asbury Theological Seminary where she taught Christian Ethics for twenty-nine years. She has written several acclaimed books on Christian practices—including Making Room (Eerdmans), Living Into Community (Eerdmans), and Friendships on the Margins (IVP) — and she speaks widely in the church and academy.

“Living Into Community with Christine D. Pohl,” is an event hosted by the Barnabas Initiatives and the Revive Initiative. The Revive Initiative is a partnership focused on providing resources, events, and an annual conference to encourage, equip, and empower regional churches and church leaders. Similarly, it is the mission of the Barnabas Initiatives to work with churches in times of stress to encourage and equip for revitalized life and witness.

Tickets for “Living Into Community with Christine D. Pohl” are $25 in advance (if bought before August 27th), and this includes your lunch which has been underwritten by sponsors. This year’s Revive Initiative Conference will take place at East Petersburg Church, at 6279 Main Street in East Petersburg, PA. The event is August 29, 8:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M.
